Does my AI assistant remember my workouts?

Only partly. Assistants like ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini can keep some details between chats in a memory feature, but that memory is a short summary, not a record of every set, run and meal. They can mix up numbers or forget older sessions. To have an assistant reliably remember your training, give it a workout log it can read and add to.

Memory isn’t a log

Assistant memory is built for preferences and facts about you: your goals, your schedule, that you don’t eat pork. It isn’t built to hold hundreds of sets with exact weights and dates. Ask it about something from six weeks ago and it may not have it. It may even fill the gap with a plausible guess.

Four ways to give it a real memory

  1. Paste your history into the chat when you ask for a plan. It works, but only in that chat.
  2. Keep a spreadsheet and upload it. Better, but you have to keep it up to date by hand.
  3. Ask it to save a summary to its memory every few weeks. Light, but it loses the detail.
  4. Use a log the assistant can read and write. Then logging and remembering happen in the same place.

What changes when it can read your log

  • Plans start from what you actually lifted, not a guess.
  • “What did I do last Tuesday?” gets a real answer.
  • Progress questions, like “is my bench going up?”, come from your numbers.
  • Food questions, like “how much protein have I had today?”, add up what you actually logged.

Also asked

Why does my assistant give me the wrong numbers from last week?

It may be relying on a memory summary or an old chat. Without a log to read, it can only guess from what it remembers.

Can I paste my workout history into a chat?

Yes, and it helps for that conversation. It gets long quickly, though. You also have to paste it again in every new chat.

Is my workout history private if an assistant reads it?

That depends on the assistant's own privacy settings and policy, which you agree to with them. Check what it keeps and whether it uses your chats for training.
